We have 16,510 staff members around the globe, some 70 per cent of whom are employed locally as national personnel. GIZ’s business volume was over EUR 1.9 billion as at 31 December 2013. Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) – one of the key subjects of the world wide activities of GIZ GIZ’s activities are shaped by the promotion of sustain- able economic and social development. Economic growth requires a skilled workforce and is the prerequisite for employment, social peace and the reduction of poverty worldwide. A key concern of many partner countries is that there are not enough skilled workers for the constantly changing demand of industry. This is often due to a lack of labour market orientation and thus employment relevance within the existing vocational education and training systems. Result is the often high (youth) unemployment rate. To promote the development of sustainable technical and vocational education and training (TVET), GIZ strives to match the supply side of labour with the demand side to meet the industry’s needs, creating ownership and ensur- ing long term solutions in partner countries. This approach fosters employability and the creation of decent jobs. GIZ supports technical and vocational education and Credit:©GIZ/AchimKoch training that is responsive to the job market and is jointly designed by the state, the business sector and the civil society. Its advisory approach focuses on processes and implementation. Policy advice is frequently linked to the development of qualification frameworks that support the quality management of TVET. GIZ makes sure that experi- ence with new structures can be incorporated into the further development of policies and strategies. Likewise decision-making processes are facilitated and partners are enabled to access experience gained in other countries. On demand GIZ works in close cooperation with German and other international training providers. GIZ offers a broad range of knowledge and instruments to develop structures in TVET, for example the analyses of labour market requirements, policy reform, development of sustainable finance mechanisms, standards and cur- ricula, qualifying TVET and labour market staff, providing teaching and learning materials, examination systems and certification. Tailor-made, demand-driven solutions are provided on the policy level, the institutional level or the implementation (regional/local/individual) level. Guidelines of our services are a close cooperation between the state and the private sector, on-the-job learning, societal acceptance of stand- ards, the training of vocational teachers and instructors as well as institutional research and career guidance.
